My mother believes that her house must be spotless before midnight on December 31 to bring her good luck in the New Year. Personally I rather get ready for a high society party, than worry about random junk that has accumulated under my bed for the past year. In L.A. getting ready for a party doesn’t only involve figuring out what you’re going to wear, but also figuring out the fastest way to get there i.e. which expressway, street, or back alleys to take and often a combination of them all. New Years Eve presents an even more stressful problem with figuring out where is the best place to party out of the hundreds, and sometimes very expensive, options. Below you’ll find a list of confetti-filled New Years Eve parties that are under $40. Once you find the party that arouses your inner party monster, go to their website to get a ticket fast. Prices may go up the closer it gets to the end of the month.
1. Hollywood Pub Crawl
Dress Code: None
Fist Pump Level: 3 out of 5
This event is geared toward people who hate being stuck in one party for more than an hour. You get V.I.P access to 10 locations on the Walk of Fame. Your one ticket gets you into the clubs and you don’t have to pay an additional cover charge. You do have to pay for drinks, but your ticket comes with reduced drink specials: 2 premium mixers for $13, 2 champagnes for $13 and $3 selected bottles/draft beer. The Hollywood Pub Crawl party starts at 7pm at Outpost Hollywood (1624 North Cahuenga Boulevard). Don’t be late or you’ll lose your party spot. I’d get there at 6pm.
2. Universal City Walk Countdown Bash
Dress Code: None
Fist Pump Level: 4 out of 5
This event is geared toward people who also like party hopping, but within a confined area and want to invite their family to hangout as well. At Universal City Walk, the entrainment multi-complex, partygoers will have unlimited access to 3 entertainment stages: Gibson Amphitheater, 5 Towers Stage, and Water World Arena.
At the Gibson Amphitheater, Ankhesenamen, a cover band specializing in punked out 80s new wave music, will be performing. The event starts at 9:00pm. At the 5 Towers Stage, Fast Times, a cover band specializing 80s hits from A-Ha to Young MC, will be performing. The event starts at 9:30pm. At the Water World Arena, DJ Host, will be spinning Top Forty music at 9:30pm. This is a family-specific event and seats will be provided, while Gibson and 5 Towers will be standing room only. At 12am fireworks will go off and will be viewable from each event area. Entry into the park does not include entry into City Walk’s regular clubs: Howl at the Moon, Infusion Lounge, Jillian’s, Jon Lovitz Comedy Club, and Saddle Ranch Chop House.
Recommendations: Parking is a nightmare so it’s best to take the Metro (Red Line to Universal City station) or carpool or valet for $55 (Self-parking is $45). Address: 100 Universal City Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90068
3. Key Club (Hollywood) Performance by E-40
Dress Code: None
Fist Pump Level: 2 out of 5
The first time I heard an E-40 song I couldn’t get the chorus, “sprinkle me main, sprinkle me main,” out of my head. On New Years Eve, Bay Area rapper E-40 will be performing at Key Club in Hollywood on Sunset Blvd. Key Club is an intimate concert venue that is multi-layered. If you love E-40 and enjoy intimate spaces then this is the party for you. According to the promoters, the show starts at 7:30pm but I doubt E-40 will come on at that time.
Things to expect: a long line, disgusting bathrooms, aggressive security, high-priced drinks, and $25 minimal credit card purchase. Address: 9039 Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA 90069
4. Belasco Theater PÜR White Party
Price: $25 + fees
Dress Code: White attire recommended but not required. But strict upscale attire will be upheld. No hats, athletic shoes, or baggy clothes
Fist Pump Level: 5 out of 5
This party gets 5 out of 5 fist pumps because for $25, you won’t be able to find a better high society party. You will be bathed in ambient light, listening to house and hip-hop, while watching an aerialist performance, balloon drop, and confetti explosions until 4am. The promoters say that there will be six party rooms. However with twelve different ticket prices (the highest being $2500), I am not sure if general admission ticket holders will be able to access all six rooms. The main room is where all the action will take place anyway. The DJ lineup has not been confirmed, but it sounds like they will big names.
Recommendations: Guys look your best. Bouncers are notorious for making guys that don’t have on dress shoes to pay $20 extra even with tickets in their hand. Address: 1050 South Hill Street, Los Angeles, CA 90015 Continue reading
